Why Coupon

Alright, I must admit that I am not nearly as good as the women (and men) who go and get $3000 worth of groceries for $.50...well, at least not yet.

My husband and I have set some serious financial goals for the next 5 years and couponing is a way for me to achieve those goals.  I think about it this way.  Let's say I throw away a $.55 off coupon for Ziploc bags in the trash.  I just threw away $.55!  I know I am going to purchase that brand for 2 reasons - Box Tops and value.  So why not take advantage?!?!

Here is the goal I set for myself.  If I can save 50% on groceries, I will be happy.  On average, my family of 5 consumes about $175 worth of groceries, cleaning products, pet supplies, etc. each week, which comes to about $700 per month.  If we could cut that in half, that will be $350 in my pocket!!  That can go towards paying down debt, savings, or anything else I need it to go to.  So why not?  All that means is that I need to save $87.50 per week.  Sound hard?  I saved over $150 this weekend without really even trying!!  It's easier than you think...just takes some dedication.

That doesn't mean I plan to devote my life to couponing.  It means, I am going to pay attention to my stores' sales and circulars, be selective with the coupons I choose, and save as much money as possible.  It can be done...oh yes, it can be done!!

That also doesn't mean that I am going to hoard enough food to take care of my family for the next thirty years, but it does mean that when things are on sale - like cereal for example - I most certainly will stock up - even if that means buying 10 boxes!  (Did I mention I bought 8 on sale at Walgreens this week?)

It's all about playing a game and having fun...so have fun with it!!

It doesn't mean that you are poor, that you can't buy what you need for your family, or anything like that.  It means you are a smart and savvy shopper who wants to save some serious cash!!
